German automotive culture on the Monterey Peninsula.

Legends of the Autobahn brings together generations of German automotive design during Monterey Car Week, from beautifully preserved classics and motorsport icons to modern performance cars and one-of-a-kind builds.

Against a backdrop of Monterey fog and towering trees, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Porsche filled the field with an incredible mix of machinery. I spent the morning documenting not only the cars, but the details, people and atmosphere that make events like this such a memorable part of Car Week.

Legends on the Field

Walking through the show felt like moving through different eras of German automotive history. Vintage BMWs sat alongside modern performance cars, classic Mercedes-Benz models shared the field with radically modified builds, and Audi and Porsche were represented by everything from understated classics to modern icons.

Built Different

Some of the most memorable cars weren't factory-original examples at all. Custom builds from S-Klub, the CMS Mercedes wagon and other enthusiast-owned cars demonstrated just how far German automotive design continues to inspire new interpretations.

The variety is part of what makes Legends of the Autobahn special. Preservation and modification aren't treated as opposing ideas—they're different ways of celebrating the same automotive history.

More Than the Cars

The cars may bring everyone together, but Monterey Car Week is as much about the culture surrounding them. Owners, builders, photographers and enthusiasts turn the show field into a gathering that feels very different from a traditional concours.

Those smaller moments—the conversations, details and unexpected scenes between the headline cars—became an equally important part of documenting the day.

Monterey Car Week 2026

Legends of the Autobahn was one stop during my Monterey Car Week coverage and an opportunity to photograph German automotive culture in one of California's most distinctive automotive settings.
